Some Advice from RA Mike MoDrak

Tips for Interview at Carousel:
-Dress to impress. You need to take this application process seriously, and there is no better way to show your interviewers this than dressing well.
-Bring a Resume. It is not required; however during your one-on-one interview we only have 15-30 minutes to talk to each applicant. A resume is a great way for us, the interviewers, to get to know you past the interview.
-Rehearse for your Interview. Guess at what you’re going to be asked and formulate points you want to address with each question type. Again, keep in mind the time limit.
-And BE YOURSELF. During your one-on-ones and group interviews you will have specific questions and tasks to complete. Be yourself and not the stereotypical leader (unless you are), because HRL is looking for all types of people for each of the different residence halls.

Tips for Choosing a Residence Hall:
Take into account the following…
1.Your course load. You will always be a student before being an RA. This job will teach you how to prioritize and multitask, but you need to make sure that you don’t overexert yourself with classes and the RA position.
2.Resident Type. On-campus housing consists of Freshman Housing, Sophomore/ Junior/ Senior Housing, Graduate Housing, International Housing, Honors Housing, Greek Housing, Coed Housing, Female-Only Housing, and more. Some housing groups require more attention than others; take that into consideration when it comes to deciding your choice housing.
3.FACILITIES. I know with the completion of Phase IX everyone is hoping to be an RA in the new building. But don’t just make a building your priority due to the quality of the rooms or suite layout. If you choose Lynch because it’s nice, but you neglect to remember that it’s a freshmen hall (and you hate freshmen) you may be very unhappy. So keep that in mind.

Tips for HRL Resources:
-Get to Know Your RA. Get to know your RA, they can write recommendations. Don’t forget to ask your RA questions, they have gone through this process and have succeeded… they are your most valuable resource.
-Get to Know your RC. They are the person in charge of your building. They can provide a valuable resource for helping your determine which building would be the best fit for yourself.
-Get to Know your GA. They are also in a leadership position in which they could help you make informed decisions. Not to mention GAs are usually more accessible than the RC of your building.
-Visit the Web. Visit your Nyumba Account and the housing website to learn about the various requirements necessary to become an RA and the application process.
-Pay Attention to Flyers. If you live on-campus your building’s walls should start becoming littered with different flyers regarding the RA position. Be observant… it’s one of the essential skills necessary to be an RA.
